But after extensive renovation, the Teton Flood Museum opened the summer of 1982 in the basement of the Rexburg Tabernacle. Currently, the Tabernacle is maintained by the City of Rexburg.

In the renovation process the city was able to have the building listed on the national Register of Historic Places. The grounds have picnic tables for public use and are maintained by the city of Rexburg.

The building is used as a civic auditorium which seats 1000 people and is well known for its excellent acoustics. An Austin pipe-organ was restored to enhance the many musical programs which are offered here.

"The rich wildlife habitat has been preserved since the turn of the century when the owners established a private hunting reserve and working cattle ranch. For 75 years, the ranch maintained healthy game, waterfowl and fish populations, allowing today’s park visitors to observe a rare concentration of wildlife in its scenic, natural surrounding."

Twenty-seven of the original Railroad Ranch buildings, from the cookhouse to the horse barn, are still intact, furnished and carefully maintained.

Porter Park!

Porter Park, named in honor of Arthur Porter, Jr., is situated in downtown Rexburg. It has picnic tables, playground equipment, tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, a waterslide, and a volleyball area. The jewel of the park, however, is the historic "Idaho Centennial Carousel," which is one of 170 antique carousels still existing in the United States. The Idaho Centennial Carousel is Idaho's only antique wooden carousel. It is one of 170 antique wooden carousels still existing in the United States. It has authentic carousel music from an organ run on paper rolls, providing old-fashioned original sounds. The carousel is housed in a new building at Porter Park.

This beautiful antique wooden carousel was built by Spillman Engineering Company of New York in about 1926. It began life as a traveling carnival machine. In 1947 it was moved to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, Utah and then to Ogden, Utah. In 1952, a public spirited group in Rexburg were disappointed by a cancellation of their expected 4th of July carnival. They heard of the merry-go-round for sale in Ogden, Utah, raised $5,500 in cash and pledges and went down and got it. It was set up with 2 days to spare and the community had a wonderful celebration. Two years later a dome was built on it to protect it from the weather. In 1976 the Teton Dam flood waters damaged it severely and several horses were lost. In 1988 the carousel was dismantled and skilled craftsmen restored it. It was renovated by 1990 in time to commemorate Idaho's 100th birthday. It has 12 newly carved horses and 26 repaired horses along with repaired chariots. Music is by Stinson Band Organ Company in Ohio. The organ runs on a paper roll, providing the old-fashioned original sounds.

This carousel is a major attraction in Rexburg and a delight to people of all ages. It is considered a "jewel" of Porter Park in Rexburg. Although it is unique and has a rich history, it is not considered a museum piece but rather a working carousel for people to ride.

While at Porter Park, some of the amenities you can use include, tennis courts, a baseball diamons, a children's playground, picnic and barbecue areas, spray park, jogging paths, basketball courts, and the Idaho Centennial Carousel.
The spray park is available for public use from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Covered picnic areas can be reserved by calling 208-359-3020 Ext. 0.

Teton Lakes Golf Course and Rexburg Municipal

The Teton Lakes Golf Course is located at 722 North 12th West. It is a 9 or 18 hole course. They offer season passes or single golf games. They also have a junior golf team and junior golf lessons. "Well maintained with nice greens. Generous fairways. Pro shop is will stocked. Easy to walk, and except for an unusual day, tee times not needed." You can find the prices and hours at their website. The Teton Lakes Golf Course had an overall rating of 4 out of 5 stars according to golflink.com.

The Rexburg Municipal golf course is located at 26 Airport Road. This course is also 9 or 18 holes. Rexburg Municipal is cheaper than Teton Lakes, but they do not offer as many options. "I really like this course. It is an older park style. Of course, that means some small greens. The first few times through you will probably miss the subtilties that make this a fun course. Pay attention to the greens. They are extremely well thought out and offer a great variety of challenges. (However, the sand traps are horrid and need some cleaner, fluffier sand. They are best played with less bounce on your wedge.) Out of bounds along the airport on holes 6, 7 and 9 will clobber your score if you tend to bend the ball to the right. Especially if the prevailing wind is blowing. The rough can get long at times. I have really enjoyed this course and plan on doing so for many years to come." You can find more reviews for Rexburg Municipal at golflink.com.
